FERODAK.
The Conquered Prejudice or The Happy Actress. Valenciennes, Vincent Labady, 1755. In-12, red morocco, triple gilt fillet, ornate smooth spine, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Extremely rare play, printed in Valenciennes. This one-act comedy, here apparently in its original edition, is by a travelling actor named Cadoret: Around the middle of the last century, two dramatic artists, M. and Mad. Cadoret or Kadoret, travelled through the cities of Flanders, Hainaut, Brabant and Holland. Cadoret was born in Versailles at the beginning of the 18th century and had two debuts at the Théâtre-Italien. ...] This character was not only an actor, he had also written [...] plays that we might today try in vain to bring together. His nom de guerre, or his name of letters if you like, was Férodak, or Térodak, an anagram of his real name, a mask under which he pretended to be German (cf. Leroy & Dinaux, Archives historiques et littéraires du Nord de la France et du Midi de la Belgique, vol. IV, 1842, pp. 581-582). We were only able to locate 2 copies of this edition in the public collections: Valenciennes and Durham (Duke University, USA: the work is attributed to Marivaux). Copy in period morocco. Minimal rubbing at the binding.
