[DU MONT (Jean)].
New journey from the Levant. The Hague, Étienne Foulque, 1694. In-12, granite calf, spine decorated, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Ibrahim-Hilmy, t. I, p. 198. Original edition, decorated with a frontispiece and 8 folding plates, all engraved in intaglio. Rare and interesting account of a trip to the Levant by a Huguenot soldier who deserted the army of Louis XIV. After the sacking of the city of Speyer in 1689, the author, having such great horror at the cruelties & sackings of so many of the Cities, of which [he had] been an eyewitness, & sometimes the Minister (pp. 20-21), left his military duties and set out for the Levant. His journey took him to Strasbourg, Lyon, Chambery, Grenoble, the Grande-Chartreuse, Mont Cenis, Turin, Marseille, Malta, Troy, Constantinople, Rhodes, Cyprus, Cairo, Smyrna, Venice, etc. The account is in the form of letters and provides important information about the countries visited. There are interesting passages about the Provençal terroir, such as oil, wine and truffles (pp. 77-80), the costumes of the Turks, and others, more curious, such as the spirit of Saint-Antoine de Marseille and the punishment of the daughters of joy in Turkey. Clear freckles, a blunt corner.
