COURET DE VILLENEUVE (Louis-Pierre).
Hortus gandavensis. Description of all the plants that are cultivated in the Botanical Garden of the Central School of the Department of the Scheldt in Ghent. Paris, at the Levrault brothers; Ghent, at the Author's, An X (1802). In-12, red morocco, gilt Greek, smooth spine decorated, green title coin, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Pritzel, no. 1931. Original edition of the first catalogue of the Botanical Garden of Ghent. Ghent became the capital of the department of the Scheldt and the Lys after Napoleon's conquest of the southern Netherlands in 1794. Like every capital city, Ghent was equipped with a central school with its own library and plant garden: in Ghent, the latter opened its doors in July 1797. In 1862, Vander Haeghen, in his Ghent Bibliography, no. 7746, wrote about the book: this catalogue is quite rare in Belgium, the author having taken the collection with him to France. Rubbed binding, spine passed and wet on the first cover.
