CARD. - BUACHE, Philippe. Physical Planisphere,... - Lot 205 - Giquello
CARD. - BUACHE, Philippe. Physical Planisphere, showing the North Pole.../Planisphere containing the celestial constellations between the southern pole and the tropics. Paris, 1752 and 1756. Double-sided frame (Not examined outside the frame). 330 x 320mm. "Physical Planisphere, where we see from the North Pole what we know of land and sea: with the great mountain ranges that cross the globe". Engraved by Léonard Schenk Jansz. Published by Buache in: "Essay in Physical Geography". The map shows the world in polar projection and illustrates Buache's theory, which is at the origin of the modern concept of the watershed. The map shows a huge western sea and a partial Northwest Passage in North America. In 1752, Philippe Buache, a geographer and member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, presented the academy with an important paper proposing a radically new theory of physical geography. This article, Essai de Géographie Physique, suggested that the structure of the Earth was made up of major mountain ranges connected under the oceans, forming immense river basins converging towards the oceans. The article was accompanied by two important maps in the history of cartography. [Boxed front and back with] : (Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille). Planisphere containing the celestial constellations between the southern pole and the tropics. Engraved by Léonard Schenk Jansz. Published in 1756 in : "Mémoires Academie Royale des Sciences pour 1752". This copy is engraved by Léonard Schenk Jansz, unlike the consulted copies, which are engraved by J. Ingram and have a different numbering. Don McGuirk, The Last Great Cartographic Myth: West Sea, 56.
