[PASCAL (Blaise) et Antoine ARNAULD].
New elements of geometry [...]. Second edition. Paris, Guillaume Desprez, 1683. In-4, granite basane, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Second edition, expanded from the original 1667 edition with a new treatise on proportions and a preface by De Beaubourg. These New Elements are characterized by a clear and precise exposition of Euclidean geometry and present the great theorems in a new order. In the last part, we find the solution given by Pascal to the problem of magic squares (pp. 385-400), one of the most famous and difficult problems of arithmetic. The 4 copper-engraved plates relating to it are on pp. 342-345. Armorized 18th-century ex-libris from the chapter library of Lisieux and wet stamps from the library of the same city. The back is decorated with a roulette wheel decorated with a fleur-de-lis and a dolphin. Upper headdress torn off, the one with the tail damaged by a worm gallery (glued back together). Split jaws and rubbed corners.
