MEMORIES ON EGYPT, published during General Bonaparte's Campaigns. Paris, P. Didot l'Aîné, An VIII-An XI [1800-1803]. 4 volumes in-8, calf porphyry, triple gilt fillet, spine decorated, green title and tomaison pieces, inside spine roulette, marbled edges (English contemporary binding). Complete collection of these scientific memoirs published by various scholars of the Egyptian expedition. It contains 2 maps, an engraved plate and 3 folding tables. Among the texts collected here are the important Memoir on the optical phenomenon known as Mirage by Gaspard Monge, the first scientific explanation of this phenomenon, a report on oases by Joseph Fourier, and observations on natron by Berthollet. A beautifully bound copy in porphyry calf, from the library of Alexandre Dalrymple (1737-1808), the eminent Scottish geographer. It bears his engraved armorial bookplate and a note in ink on the flyleaf of the first volume indicating the auction price at the Dalrymple sale of 1809. Restored hinges, blunt corners.
