MALUS (Étienne Louis).
Set of 6 dissertations in 5 booklets in-4, modern bindings. Meeting of 6 dissertations concerning Malus' pioneering work on polarization, constituted as follows: - "Memoir on the measurement of the refractive power of opaque bodies" in Mémoire presented at the Institute of Science, Letters and Arts...., vol. II, 1811, pp. 509-517, with a folding plate giving the results of experiments on the refractive force of wax. I, 1807-1808, n°16, pp. 266-269. I, 1809, n°20, pp. 341-344, and n°21, pp. 353-355. XI, 1814. French physicist and mathematician, Etienne Louis Malus (1775-1812) took part in the Egyptian expedition and is known for his work on the polarization of light, a term of which he himself is the inventor. His dissertation on the refractive power of opaque bodies touches on a point of optics of extreme importance; it was nothing less than a motivated decision between two rival theories of light (François Arago) (on Malus, see André Chappert, Malus et la théorie corpusculaire de la lumière, 1977).
