JULIA (Gaston).
"Rational Function Iteration Memory". In: Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, 7th series, t. IV, 1918, pp. 47-245. In-4, grey half-cover bradel with corners, title in ink on top spine, blue printed cover (contemporary binding). Original edition of the great memoir of Gaston Julia, the "mathematician with a broken mouth". Gaston Julia (1893-1978) is one of the most eminent mathematicians of the 20th century. Mobilized in 1914, he was shot in the face in battle, disfiguring him and condemning him to wear a black leather mask for the rest of his life. Despite his suffering, he found the strength and courage to write a thesis on the theory of numbers during his hospitalization, which he presented brilliantly in 1917. In 1918, he published this remarkable dissertation of about 200 pages on the iteration of rational functions which crowned him with the Grand Prix des Sciences Mathématiques of the Académie des Sciences de Paris.
