GAUSS (Carl-Friedrich).
- INTELLIGENTZBLATT der Allgemeinen Literatur-Zeitung. Jena, 1796. In-4, bradel cardboard, marbled paper, handwritten label on the spine, red edges (German binding of the time). Number 66 of this volume contains the announcement that Gauss himself discovered the construction of the regular seventeen-sided polygon (June 1, 1796, col. 554). This discovery is a major, if not unhoped-for, advance in the solution of a problem that has been sought since Greek Antiquity. At barely 19 years of age, Gauss (1777-1855) had thus secured universal fame and the title of prince of mathematicians. It is said that Gauss, carrying this feat so high, requested that a 17-sided regular polygon be engraved on his tombstone (cf. Archibald, "Gauss and the Regular Polygon of Seventeen Sides" in The American Mathematical Monthly, 1920, vol. 27, 7/9, pp. 323-326). The Intelligentzblatt is the supplement to the periodical Allgemeinen Literatur-Zeitung, of which the 4 identically bound volumes of the year 1796 are enclosed here. Freckles due to the nature of the paper. Painted and varnished back. GALOIS. See lot 140. GAY-LUSSAC. See lot 173.
