Letters to a German princess on various subjects of physics and philosophy. Bern, At the Typographical Society, 1775. 3 volumes in-8, speckled basane, cold fillet, smooth spine decorated lengthwise, red title and tomaison pieces, edges speckled with blue (contemporary binding). The Letters to a Princess by Leonard Euler (1707-1783), a Swiss mathematician who was a disciple of Bernoulli, were first published in St Petersburg in 1768-1772. Their success was considerable. Written for the instruction of the Princess of Anhalt-Dessau, niece of the King of Prussia, they deal with various subjects of physics, mathematics and philosophy: the compression of air, gravity, light, gravitation, electricity, magnetism, the nature of spirits, supernatural events, etc. Pleasant copy, in a very nice decorated binding of the time. Reinforced edge to a plate of volume II. Small hook on two covers, corners rubbed. FINISHED. See lot 34.
