FÉRUSSAC (baron de).
General and universal bulletin of scientific announcements and news. Paris, Au bureau du Bulletin, 1823. 4 volumes. - Bulletin of mathematical, astronomical, physical and chemical sciences. First section of the Bulletin universel des sciences et de l'industrie. Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, Dufour et d'Ocagne, Didot, etc., 1824-1831. 16 volumes. Set of 20 volumes in-8, cherry half calf, decorated smooth spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition. Complete collection of the first section of the Bulletin de Férussac, this one exclusively devoted to mathematical, astronomical, physical and chemical sciences. At the cutting edge of scientific current events. Founded in 1823 by Baron André de Férussac (1786-1836), the Bulletin was one of the most important scientific periodicals of the first half of the 19th century, until its bankruptcy in 1831. This first section contains no less than 4500 entries, from the simple announcement of publication to more or less detailed articles, sometimes ten pages long, including summaries of academic sessions, brief notes, book reviews and sometimes unpublished memoirs. Among the authors who have regularly collaborated in this undertaking are Cournot, Cauchy, Navier, Poisson, etc., for mathematics, Ampère and Becquerel for physics-chemistry, and Freycinet and Francoeur for astronomy. The Bulletin's essential interest lies above all in the faithful image it gives of the various trends emerging in the mathematical research of its time (René Taton). His contribution to mathematics is crucial since it made it possible to publicize the work of Galois and Lebesgue. Thus, in volume XIII, we find 3 unpublished articles by Évariste Galois (1811-1832) which are at the origin of the theory of finite groups: - Analysis of a Memoir on the algebraic resolution of equations (pp. 271-272). - Note on the resolution of numerical equations (pp. 413-414). - On number theory (pp. 428-435).
