DUPIN (Charles).
Applications in geometry and mechanics [sic], marine, road and bridge engineering, etc.; to follow up on geometry developments. Paris, Bachelier, 1822. In-4, marbled basane, decorated spine, red coin, speckled edges (contemporary binding). Original edition of one of the most important works by Charles Dupin (1784-1873), illustrated with 17 folding plates. This text is the birth certificate of the term "cyclides" in mathematical literature: indeed, it is in this work that Dupin named for the first time surfaces with circular curvature lines (cf. Christen & Vatin, Charles Dupin, 2009). Freckles on the boards, one of which is very scorched along the length of the badly bent part. Decoration of the binding faded, upper hinge redone.
