DESCARTES (René).
The World, or the treatise of light, and other main objects of the Senses. Paris, Théodore Girad [sic], 1664. Petit in-8, granite basane, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Original edition, decorated with a few figures on wood in the text, including 4 full-page figures showing the position of the stars and planets in the sky. The work was completed in 1633, but Descartes, having learned of Galileo's condemnation for having supported the movement of the Earth, decided not to publish it. Published fourteen years after his death, it contains Descartes' physical research on the nature and properties of light, as well as his theory of cosmogony based on a vortex mechanism. Title re-marked on the edge. Restored headdresses.
