DELAMBRE (Jean-Baptiste).
Analytical methods for the determination of a meridian arc. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, Duprat, An VII [1799]. In-4, marbled half-basane with small corners, smooth spine decorated, orange title coin, red edges (contemporary binding). Original edition, decorated with 2 folding plates engraved by Duruisseau. Astronomers Jean-Baptiste Delambre (1749-1822) and Pierre Méchain were commissioned to measure the arc of the meridian between Dunkirk and Barcelona. Their work, slowed down by the climate created by the Terror, lasted ten years and led to the metric system. This edition also contains Legendre's Method for determining the exact length of the quarter of the meridian. Some freckles.
