[COURNOT (Augustin)].
"On the calculation of the conditions of inequality, announced by Mr. Fourier". In: SAIGEY and FÉRUSSAC, Bulletin des sciences mathématiques, physiques et chimiques, n°7, July 1826, pp. 1-8. In-8, paperback, untrimmed, blue cover printed in black. The very first mathematics article written by Augustin Cournot (cf. Thierry Martin, Nouvelle bibliographie cournotienne, p. 15). Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) was one of the founders of probabilistic thought and a precursor of the mathematization of economic theory. He applied Fourier's (1823) calculation of inequalities to his work in mechanics, in particular in a thesis published in the Journal de Crelle in 1830. Inequalities were used with relevance, but only to express properties such as the positive values of pressure on support points, or the fact that the forces of motion surpassed (or did not surpass) those of resistance or friction. Thus, while he published more about Fourier's initiative than anyone else, he did not advance it theoretically (Thierry Martin, Actualité de Cournot, 2005, p. 75).
