BROCHANT DE VILLIERS (André).
Geological observations on transitional terrains that meet in the Tarentaise and other parts of the Alps. S.l.n.d. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Bossange, Masson et Besson, 1808]. In-8, brocaded and sewn with thread, untrimmed, silent blue cover of the period, modern slipcover. Very rare reprint from the Journal des mines, n°137 of May 1808 (missing at Ward & Carozzi). Interesting memoir of alpine geology by André Brochant (1772-1840), geologist and mineralogist who taught at the École des Mines and became a member of the Académie des Sciences : In 1808, Brochant published in the Journal des Mines a dissertation on the Tarentaise terrain that was to have an enormous impact (Brochant proposed to rejuvenate the Alpine terrain considered primitive until then) and to exert considerable influence by prompting new research that would lead to the discovery of alpine metamorphism (Philippe Grandchamp in Scientifiques et sociétés pendant la Révolution et l'Empire, CTHS, 1990, p. 548). Paperback copy, as published.
