Brown, p. 313. - Fowler, n°411. - Mortimer, French books, n°551. Second edition in French of the great treatise on architecture by Vitruvius, translated by Jean Martin. Its illustration is practically identical to that of the first French edition of 1547 and includes a large number of woodcut figures in the text and on the full page: some engravings are attributed to the artist Jean Goujon, others are wood copies of the Venice (1511) and Como (1521) editions. A copy in contemporary binding belonging to Barnabé Brisson (1531-1591), jurisconsult under the reign of Henry III and first president of the Paris Parliament, executed by the Sixteen for treason: Pierre Bayle relates that Henry III used to say that there was no prince in the world who could boast of having a man as learned as his Brisson. The ex-libris manuscript of this magistrate is affixed to the title: To Mr Brysson, Servant to the King. A scratched ex-libris. Title up, clear freckles.
