VIRGILE. - [ORSINI (Fulvio)
. Virgilius collatione scriptorum graecorum illustratus. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1568 [at the end]: November 1567. In-8, fawn calf, gilt fillet, central medallion with interlacing decoration on azure ground, spine decorated (contemporary binding). First work by the humanist Fulvio Orsini (1529-1600), philologist, antiquarian and librarian of the Farnese Library. Dedicated to the Cardinal of Granvelle, to whom the author was close, it completes the Plantinian edition of the Virgil of 1566 in the translation by Paul Manuce (cf. Ruelens & De Backer, pp. 67-68). This edition is identical to the 1567 edition, but has a rejuvenated title, dated 1568 and adorned with the Plantin compass mark. Old manuscript ex-libris at the bottom of the title, undetermined. Binding of the period, probably local, decorated with a pretty cartouche with an azure background. Inverted Q & R notebooks. Freckles at the foot of the last 7 notebooks. Hinges partly split with lack of skin, and three jaws whose restorations did not hold. Hook on the upper cap.
