THUCYDIDE.
De bello Peloponnesiaco Libri VIII. S.l. Geneva], Henry II Estienne, 1588. In-folio, stiff overlapping vellum, smooth spine with the title in ink at the head, red back cover, blue edges (17th century binding). Renouard, Estienne, pp. 152-153, no. 4. - Schreiber, n°216. - PMM, n°102. Pretty edition of Thucydides, the most esteemed edition of the 16th century. Printed on two columns, the Latin translation opposite the Greek text, it is superior to the previous one provided by Estienne (1564): the latter revives entirely the Greek text and the scolies, as well as the Latin translation by Lorenzo Valla. Pleasant copy in old vellum, with beautiful margins (H. 348 mm). Bookplate and wet seal on the title of the Jesuit Library of St. Acheul. Slit in the margin of a leaf of the scolies, without gravity; piece of margin carefully torn from the dd3 leaf without missing. Pale wetness on a few leaves, minor tear in the lower corner of 6 leaves including the title.
