SOPHOCLE.
Philoctetes [graecae and latinae]. Paris, Fédéric Morel, 1586. 2 parts in one volume in-4, fawn half-basane, plates covered with marbled paper, titlepice on spine, edges speckled with red (English binding of the 18th century). Wonderful Greek edition by Fédéric Morel. The Greek text is followed, in separate pagination, by the Latin translation and glosses. First edition of the Latin translation by Florent Chrétien (1541-1596), a humanist born in Orléans who was the tutor of Henri IV and one of the collaborators of the Satyr Menippée. Armorial ex-libris engraved by Thomas Dampier (18th century Anglo-Saxon provenance). Light freckles on the first notebook, trace of transverse folding on the title. Rubbing at the binding, partly cracked hinges and missing caps.
