Exoticarum exercitationum liber XV. De Subtilitate. Frankfurt, heirs of André Wechel, 1582. Large volume in-8, cold-stamped sowskin, sets of fillets and rollers on the plates, portrait in the centre (different on each plate), spine ribbed and decorated, author's name in ink at the top, red edges (Binding at the time). Refutation by the humanist Scaliger (1484-1558) of the metaphysical and scientific theses stated by Jerome Cardan in De subtilitate libri XXI published in Nuremberg in 1550. The Exoticarum exercitationum, originally published in 1557, became a reference work that counted among its admirers Juste Lipse, Bacon, Kepler and Leibniz among its admirers. Beautiful Germanic binding with the effigies of Charles V and John Frederick of Saxony. Some old handwritten annotations in the margins. Milled to the last 11 notebooks.
