RONSARD (Pierre de).
The First Four Books of the Odes. Together his Bocage. Paris, Guillaume Cavellart [sic], 1550. - Ode of peace. Paris, Guillaume Cavellat, 1550. Set of 2 books in one volume in-8, soft vellum (Placed in a contemporary binding). Collection of two very rare first editions of Ronsard: First edition of the first four books of the Odes, Ronsard's first poetic collection (cf. Tchemerzine, t. V, p. 416. - Ronsard: la trompette et la lyre, cat. BnF, no. 46). The publication of Les Odes ronsardiennes [...] resounded like a thunderbolt in the contemporary world of literature, constituting one of the key moments in French literary history. ...] apart from three pieces, the complete verses are unpublished and revived the old poetic genre of the ode, so prized by ancient authors (Ducimetière, No. 3). The copy does not have the Suravertissement, but does include the 2 errata leaves. Original edition of the Ode to Peace, a poem celebrating the signing of peace between France and England in March 1550. Known in less than 10 copies (4 or 5 according to Tchemerzine, t. V, p. 417), this piece was published separately but is often found bound with the first four books of the Odes as is the case here, where it is inserted between the introductory leaves and the beginning of the text. Facsimile Leaf C3. Copy rebound in old vellum, spine partly uncoupled. Some light brown spots, small lack of vellum in the binding.
