RABELAIS (François).
The Works. Containing five books of the life, faicts, & so-called heroic of Gargantua, & of his son Pantagruel. Anvers, François Nierg, 1573. 3 parts in one volume in-16, red morocco, covers decorated with gilt fillets joined at the corners, spine decorated with fillets and a small repeated iron, inside roulette, gilt edges (Modern pastiche binding). Plan, n°105. Very rare edition, very elegantly printed, reproducing line for line the one given by Pierre Estiart in 1571. Each title (first, second, third and fifth book) is placed in an identical woodcut frame. The figure of the bottle can be found on p. 141 of the last part. Copy with some marginal annotations in pen by a 17th century English reader who inscribed his ex-libris on the title. Charming copy in a pretty pastiche binding in the style of the 17th century. Small tear without missing at the bottom of the n1 leaf (restored), hole removing a letter on the back of the last table leaf. Some leaves cut a bit short by the binder. Some wet spots at the end of the volume.
