Naturae historiarum libri XXXVII. Paris, Pierre Gaudoul and Pierre Vidoue, 1524 [n.s. 1525]. 2 parts in one volume in folio, fawn calf, double cold-framed filets, central medallion with interlacing decoration on azure ground, small gilt fleuron at the corners, spine with raised bands (contemporary binding). Moreau, t. III, no. 886. Rare and beautiful Parisian edition, printed in round letters. The general title, printed in red and black, is placed in a beautiful woodcut frame by the Basel artist Urs Graf around 1519-1520 for the bookseller Conrad Resch and then used by Pierre Vidoue in some of his editions. The last leaf of the first part bears on the reverse side the typographical mark of Pierre Vidoue (cf. Renouard, no. 1096), which is set in a beautiful woodcut frame also carved by Urs Graf. The second part of the volume, occupied by the index, due to Johannes Camers (1447-1546), Franciscan humanist and theologian, begins with a title placed in a superb frame with grotesque heads and flowers from Pierre Gromors' material. Several ancient manuscript ex-libris, including that of a doctor named Pierre Bouesnel (17th-18th centuries). Replaced in its pretty Parisian gilt medallion binding, spine and hinges restored, endpapers renewed. Marginal moulding on a few leaves including the title, brown ink stains on the upper edge reaching the head of some leaves. A table leaf of the index is not bound in its place (error reported by a reader of the time).
