PLAUTE.
Opera. Paris [Jean Le Blanc fils pour] Jean Macé, [octobre] 1576. In-folio, fawn half calf with corners, cold fillets, spine decorated, repeated gilt fleuron, small full-length coat of arms, green title coin, combed edges (Offmann-Duplanil). First edition of the translation by the humanist Denis Lambin (1520-1572), professor of Greek at the Collège de France and emeritus Latinist. Published posthumously by Jacques Hélie, it is one of the best early editions of the Comédies de Plaute. Beautifully printed in Roman, italic and Greek characters, with large ornate initials. The penultimate leaf contains on the back a Latin elegy by Denis Lambin by Jean Passerat. Pleasant copy, with fine margins (H. 332 mm), bound in full with the arms of Louis-Alexandre Gitton du Plessis, bibliophile of Blois: this ardent bibliophile collected in particular the specimens of the most famous presses since the invention of printing (cf. Guigard, t. II, p. 193). From the P. de La Morandière library (ex-libris). Clear moulding at the head and foot of a few leaves, a few scorched leaves. Rubbing at the binding, spine a little lightened.
