PESTE DE MOSCOU.
- SCHAFONSKI (Athanasia). In Russian]: Description of the plague that existed in the capital city of Moscow from 1770 to 1772, together with all the measures taken to extinguish it, printed by supreme order. Moscow, at the Imperial University, 1775. In-4, red morocco, double frame of gilt castors with fleurons in the corners, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, green morocco coin, gilt edges (Russian binding of the time). Blake, p. 333. Original edition, very rare. It is decorated with 2 plans: a plan of the hospital and its services, and a plan of the safe house with associated services. The book, dedicated to Great Catherine, was published by Athanase Schafonski (or Schaffonsky), chief physician of the great military hospital of Moscow. It presents a very complete account of the plague that ravaged the Russian capital in 1771, killing no less than 100,000 Muscovites: this was the last massive epidemic in central Russia. The treaty studies the sources of the epidemic, which spread from Moldova, the theatre of the Russo-Turkish war, through Poland and Ukraine; then the means used to combat its spread, such as checkpoints, limiting entry and exit, quarantine, the destruction by fire of all the property of those infected, etc. The treaty also describes the means used to combat the spread of the plague. Precious copy in morocco with the arms of Great Catherine. It comes from the library of the imperial palace of Pavlovsk, near St Petersburg, with its storage label. Top back past.
