PALFIJN (Jan).
Surgical anatomy, or exact description of the parts of the human body, with useful remarks for surgeons in the Practice of their Art. Paris, Veuve Cavelier & Fils, 1753. 2 volumes in-8, marbled calf, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). Blake, p. 336. New edition, completely redesigned and enlarged, decorated with 55 (28 + 27) copper-engraved plates, many of which unfold. Jan Palfijn (1650-1730), Flemish anatomist, obstetrician and surgeon, is considered the follower of Mauriceau. He is the inventor in 1722 of the forceps, then known as Palfijn's head-puller. An interesting copy that belonged to a master surgeon of the 18th century: Augustin Figuet, member of the Royal College of Surgery of Lyon, with his engraved label and handwritten ex-libris on the titles. A few freckles, pale wetness at the head of the last leaves of Volume I. Rubbing at the binding.
