MONTAIGNE (Michel de).
Testing. Leiden [Geneva], Jean Doreau, 1602. Large volume in-8, soft vellum with overlap (Rebound in a contemporary binding). Counterfeit of the Parisian edition published the same year by Les Angelier. Published and printed by Pyramus de Candolle, under the name of Jean Doreau, a printer born in Fréjus and based in Geneva, it contains the three books of the Essays. Copy of edition A. Handwritten ex-libris at the top of the title: Du Roure. Perhaps it refers to the Marquis Du Roure (1783-1858), author of the Analectabiblion (1836-1837), member of the Société des Bibliophiles françois and author of an Éloge de Montaigne, although the copy is not mentioned in the sales catalogue of his library, which was dispersed in 1848. Small brown ink stain pp. 205-206; angular wetness in some of the notebooks, pronounced in the Aa-Ee notebooks. Tiny worm gallery at the corner of 6 folios in the F-G notebooks. Guards renewed, small snag at the upper edge.
