In-folio, brown chagrin on heavy cardboard cut in bevels, double cold fillet in frame, spine ribbed with cold fillet extending over the plates, gilt title, gilt edges (Morley Bros. at Oxford). GW, 13459. - HC, 8883. - Pellechet, 6071. - Goff, H448. Beautiful Venetian incunabulum edition of the complete works of Horace, the second commented by Cristoforo Landino (1424-1492). This famous Florentine humanist had published a first edition the previous year in Florence. In the present edition, the text is printed in Roman type, framed by Landino's commentaries printed in a smaller size. Large-margined copy containing a few marginal or interlinear annotations by two or three contemporary or early sixteenth-century readers. Engraved bookplate by James Jerome Hill (1838-1916), Canadian-American railway magnate, and stamped on a guard of the Camargo Foundation in Cassis. Pale marginal moulding to some notebooks. Large stain on 3 leaves of notebook q, brown ink stain at the corner of 14 leaves at the end of the volume, the last leaf is stained and has been lined. Splinters at the caps, marked hinges.
