GALILÉE.

Systema cosmicum. Augustae Treboc [Strasbourg], Impensis Elzeviriorum, Typis Davidis Haulti, 1635. In-4, soft vellum, smooth spine, long title (contemporary binding).
Carli & Favaro, Bibliografia Galileiana, no. 148. - Riccardi, pp. 512-513. - Willems, n°426.
- Rahir, n°418.
First Latin edition of this fundamental text of Galileo.
Translated by Matthias Berneggerus, it was printed at the expense of the Elzeviers in Strasbourg on the presses of David Haultius.
Beautiful copper-engraved title-frontispiece representing Aristotle, Ptolemy and Copernicus conversing under a banner unfurled by two cherubs bearing the title Dialogus de systemate mundi.
Beautiful portrait of Galileo in medallion in an ornamented frame, engraved in intaglio by Jacques Heyden.
Handwritten ex-libris at the top of the title of a Jesuit college, dated 1674. Printed ex-libris of the minor seminary of Saint-Jodard.
A vellum copy of the time: in order to be consistent with the other volumes of a library, the spine of the binding had formerly been covered with a skin which has now been torn off and has left traces.
Transversal fold on the frontispiece which is slightly trimmed at the foot (two lines of text are missing). Ink stain on the upper edge of pp. 165-170. The paper of the volume, of poor quality, is very heavily browned as most of the time.
