FRACASTORO (Girolamo).
Operum. Lyon, François Le Fèvre, 1591. 3 parts in a strong volume in-8, soft vellum with overlap (Binding of the period). Baudrier, t. V, pp. 504-505 (erroneous collation). - Durling, n°1634. Rare collective edition of the works of Fracastor (1483-1553), a Veronese physician and poet who distinguished himself by his research on the spread of infectious diseases. The famous poem Syphilis sive morbus gallicus, dedicated to Pietro Bembo, in which the author discusses this disease and recommends the use of mercury, can be found at pp. 615-657 of the first part. The second part is mainly occupied by the In Homocentricorum, a treatise on optics and astronomy describing a new system populated by concentric spheres. Galleries of worms in the lower margin of several notebooks (z, A to E, K to M), small marginal wet spots. Small lack of vellum on the upper cover, a nibbled covering, stained vellum.
