DALECHAMPS (Jacques).
French surgery. Lyon, Guillaume Rouille, 1569. In-8, brown basane, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (17th century binding). Baudrier, t. IX, p. 322 (quotes a single copy, incomplete from several notebooks). - Durling, n°1092. Extremely rare first edition of the treatise on surgery by Jacques Dalechamps (1513-1588), a scholarly physician born in Caen and died in Lyon. The text is embellished with numerous woodcut illustrations taken from Ambroise Paré and Vidius, depicting surgical instruments (iron-screwed screw-cushion to cut large quantities of flesh, corbin beak, pelicans & daviets to break and pull out teeth, probes, pincers, etc.) and techniques for repairing fractures. Beautiful woodcut portrait of the author by Pierre Vase. Based on a translation of Paul d'Égine's Book VI on surgery, the book is considered to be "the first treatise on general surgical technique written in French" in which visceral surgery is separated from osteo-articular surgery (cf. Ph. Bonnichon, M. Fontaine and J. Vons, "La Chirurgie françoise de Jacques Dalechamps, commentateur de Paul d'Égine" in Histoire des sciences médicales, t. LII, n°1, 2018, pp. 91-98). Copy of which the first part (p. 1 to 293) has been annotated by a contemporary hand (annotations slightly damaged by the bookbinder's knife). It carries at the end this ex-libris: Ce pnt [présent] livre appartient à moy Pierre Marchant compaignon barbier à Lyon. Missing leaf y1 (pp. 337-338). Leaves l4-5 detached, current title of leaves N3-4 cut. Uniform freckles and wetness throughout the volume, worm gallery in the lower margin of the first 4 leaves. Binding very rubbed, decoration largely faded on the spine, lower edge of the second cover a little nibbled.
