CALIDASA (ou KALIDASA).
The Acknowledgement of Sacountala, a Sanskrit drama and pracrit of Calidasa, published for the first time, in original, on a unique manuscript from the King's Library, accompanied by a French translation, philological, critical and literary notes, and followed by an appendix. Paris, À la Librairie orientale de Dondey-Dupré père et fils, 1830. In-4, red morocco, sets of gilt fillets and cold scrolls in frame, frame drawn by rocaille irons, decorated spine, inner wheel, blue moiré paper lining and endpapers, gilt edges, first cover cover cover (Binding of the period). First edition in French of this drama about the loves of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala. It is dedicated to Baron Silvestre de Sacy. Translated by Antoine-Léonard Chézy (1775-1832), an orientalist who was the first Sanskrit teacher at the Collège de France, it was printed at the expense of the Société asiatique de Paris (cf. Brunet, t. I, col. 1475). The work is accompanied by a folding plate lithographed by Knecht and Senefelder, reproducing fragments of Sanskrit manuscripts. The translator's copy, with notes from his hand in the margin of the Sanskrit text. It was then offered by the widow of the latter, as this signed consignment on the first cover plate indicates: To Mr. Duchesne. In fulfilment of the promise of his friend Chézy, by his widow. A rare gift. Freckles on some pages, small rubbing on the binding.
