[BOUTON (Victor)]
Study on Bourdaloue by Mr. S. de Sacy of the French Academy. Paris, Exposition Universelle, 1878 [1870]. Manuscript in-8 (185 x 120 mm) of 2 white ff., 29 ff.n.ch. and 2 white ff.: brown morocco, Jansenist, gilt title on spine, inside lace, gilt edges (late 19th century binding). Charming manuscript, calligraphed on parchment by Victor Bouton. It is a copy of Silvestre de Sacy's Introduction for the 1869 edition, published in Paris by Léon Téchener fils, of Bourdaloue's P pensées sur diverses sujets de religion et de morale (volume I). The manuscript is decorated with 18 initials on a dotted background with floral motifs and 5 small original pen drawings, remarkably finely executed, one at the foot of the title depicting an angel, the others in the form of bands interspersed in the text and representing various scenes: three figures recollecting at the foot of a "calvary", a family in an interior, a scene of charity and a woman and child at the bedside of a deceased person. The text, set, is surrounded by a frame drawn by two red and pink fillets, with a golden star in the corners, the initials are all enhanced with gold and the proper names or titles of works are in pink or red ink. Polygrapher and heraldist Victor Bouton (1819-1901), famous for the quality of his handwritten copies, signed and dated the manuscript on the back of the last page: his sculpsit and delineavit appear in a phylactery held by a cherub, with the date 1870. As the title indicates, this manuscript must have been presented at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878, but we do not explain the difference between the two dates. Name of the bookbinder erased in the lace on the upper back cover.
