The Life and Mysteries of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. Paris et Nantes, Henri Charpentier, [1859]. In-folio, 6 ff.n.ch. (including false title, title-frontispiece, dedication to Pius IX), 1 pl. (Mary in her glory), V pp., 1 p.n.ch., 1 f.n.ch. (table of contents), 62 pl. numbered from I to XXXII and from I bis to XXXII bis, 1 f.n.ch. (notice to the bookbinder), all mounted on tabs: red chagrin, double framed with two bold and thin cold gilt filets, rectangular cold panel with scroll motifs and interlacing at the corners, large mandorla-shaped cold cartouche drawn by a scroll border with a large gilt iron in the centre showing the Virgin Mary in majesty, spine with four ribs decorated with special irons, inner scroll, lining and endpapers of ivory moiré paper, gilt edges (publisher's binding). Luxurious publication almost entirely chromolithographed. It is decorated with a title-frontispiece (representation of the Tree of Jesse) and a plate showing Mary in her glory. The main text, as well as the beginning of the dedication to Pius IX and the table of contents, are printed in gothic characters in black, red and blue on 62 richly ornamented plates: the frames (copied from medieval manuscripts), ornate initials, miniatures and line ends were chromolithographed in colour, gold and silver by Lemercier after drawings by Kellerhoven, Gsell, Ciappori and Ledoux. Each chromolithography is protected by a snake of pink paper. Beautiful publisher's plate binding. The large gilt iron in the centre of the plates, representing Mary in her glory, was engraved after the eponymous plate drawn by Gsell. Some rubbing at the binding.
