PRENOSTICATION (The) by maistre Albert songecreux... - Lot 138 - Giquello
PRENOSTICATION (The) by maistre Albert songecreux bisscain. Without place or date [Paris, Martin, 1861]. In-4 gothic, 4 ff.n.ch.: dark green morocco, Jansenist, spine ribbed with the title in gold, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). Curious almanac in verse recited in a basoche festival on the occasion of the Christmas celebrations of 1527. It is due to a man named Songecreux, a nickname that is not unlike that of Jean de L'Espine du Pont-Allais, a boatman who was one of Pierre Gringore's main rivals on the Parisian trestles. Some of the predictions made by the author concern cities in the North of France and Belgium (Rouen, Dieppe, Amiens, Abbeville, Saint-Omer, Béthune, Louvain, Antwerp, etc.), and others are related to food and drink, with an enumeration of various beverages such as Beaune wine, Auxerre wine, cervoise, hypocras, Rommenie wine [sic for Romanée], etc. This facsimile reprint, perfectly executed using the Pilinski process, was based on the only known copy of this text that belonged to the Duke of La Vallière, Richard Heber, Félix Solar, and then Léopold Double. Gothic printing on two columns, decorated with a large woodcut on the title showing a fool in costume and holding a marotte, and another large woodcut on the back of the last page. Limited edition of 104 copies. One of the 4 copies on old paper, in a nice Trautz-Bauzonnet binding. The preface of the bibliophile Jacob (6 pages) was not kept by the bookbinder: would one have wanted, at the time, to pass this facsimile off as an authentic edition? Minimal rubbing at the binding.
