New morality of the Bad Rich and the Ladre.... - Lot 124 - Giquello
New morality of the Bad Rich and the Ladre. To twelve characters. Without place or date [Aix, Augustin Pontier, 1823]. Platelet in-8 of 16 ff.n.ch.: dark blue morocco with long grain, framed by gilt filets and fleurons, octagonal plate in the center, smooth back decorated lengthwise, inner wheel, lining and endpapers of lilac moiré paper, gilt edges (Gaudard). Reprint in round letters of the adaptation in verse of the gospel parable of the bad rich man: it is decorated on the title with a woodcut showing Job on his manure, a copy of the engraving of the Gothic edition published in Paris around 1500-1520 and cited by Bechtel under the reference M-493. Edition at 67 copies, not including the 5 for the legal deposit, this one on vellum paper. Very nice binding decorated with a Restoration plate, made by the Jura bookbinder Étienne Gaudard (1792-1878). A very rare signature as that of Gaudard, bookbinder born in Dole (like Bauzonnet) and active in Dijon between 1815 and 1845 approximately. The binding bears his label on the back cover, at the address of 5 rue Portel in Dijon. Bookplates bearing the monogram CMBI and the motto Plus penser que dire, unidentified. The last page, containing the justification for the facsimile edition, has not been kept, probably on purpose.
