BIBLE. - History of the Old and New Testament, with edifying explanations taken from the Holy Fathers, by de Royaumont, prior of Sombreval. Paris, Mame, 1812. 2 parts in one volume in-8, VIII and 366 pp., 1 f.n.ch. (false-title), 192 pp. (the last one unencumbered): long-grained red morocco, gilt roulette, smooth spine decorated, special iron and repeated spider web iron, inside Greek, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Stereotype edition of the Port-Royal Bible, printed on wove paper. It is decorated with 267 beautiful figures engraved in relief using the Duplat process, printed with the text under an intaglio press: 183 for the Old Testament, and 84 for the New. The invention of relief engraving on stone. Jean-Louis Duplat (1757-1833), wood engraver, born in Orange and active in Paris from the end of the 18th century, is the inventor of this new process. In 1805, he received encouragement for his experiments on stone, which were largely based on chemical biting experiments. Five years later, he obtained the precious patent: Duplat was certainly one of the first Frenchmen to know the lithographic results, and from the beginning of this discovery he tried to apply the elements to his usual work, relief engraving. Duplat is one of a long line of inventors who were determined to use lithography for relief engraving (Beraldi, Les Graveurs du XIXe siècle, 1891, vol. XI, p. 26, note). Duplat applied his invention - patented - for the first time to illustrate an edition of La Fontaine's Fables published by Renouard in 1811. This bible seems to be the second book illustrated according to his process. A tastefully bound copy at the time. Freckles and prickles, small brown ink stain on a few leaves, 4 leaves a little bit dislodged. Slight rubbing at the binding. (Firmin-Didot, Essai sur l'histoire de la gravure sur bois, p. 281.- P.
