CATECHISM for the use of all the churches... - Lot 116 - Giquello
CATECHISM for the use of all the churches of the French empire, printed by order of Mgr. the Bishop of St. Flour, to be taught alone in his diocese. St. Flour, Widow Sardine; Au Puy, J. B. La Combe, 1810. In-12, 158 and IX pp.: brocaded, sewn with a thread in a cover of dominoté paper (binding of the time). Catechism published by order of Jean-Éléonore Montanier de Belmont, bishop of Saint-Flour. Rare Auvergne printing. The beginnings of printing in Saint-Flour seem to date back to the middle of the 17th century (see Deschamps, col. 1435, who cites an Ordinance published at the synod in 1659, according to information communicated to him by a bibliophile), if not at the latest at the beginning of the following century. Charming specimen of a dominant paper, with flower motifs, exceptionally well preserved for a work of regular use. Moreover, this catechism written under the control of Napoleon did not survive the fall of the Empire. The bishops had been systematically kept out of its drafting to the point that the Roman curia leaned first towards a solemn pontifical condemnation. In fact, catechists often used abbreviations that dated back to the Ancien Régime.
