VIRGILE
The Bucolics, preceded by several Idylls of Theocritus, Bion and Moschus; followed by all the passages of Theocritus that Virgil imitated. Paris, Librairie de Firmin Didot, 1806. In-8, 2 ff.n.ch. (false title and title), 5 ff.n.ch. (dedication to Pierre Didot) and 264 pp. (the last one unencrypted): bradel cardboard bradel of pink paper, smooth spine, night-blue title piece and piece of the same colour at the tail bearing the name of the owner, smooth edges, apple-green cardboard edge protectors (binding of the time). Famous bilingual Latin-French edition of Les Bucoliques, translated and printed by Firmin Didot (1764-1836). First work of the famous printer and bibliophile, heir and successor of the dynasty: it is dedicated to his brother, Pierre Didot. The dedication printed in "Anglaise" is the first appearance of the cursive character, created and melted by Firmin Didot himself. The dedicatory epistle gives an account of the technical prowess because the types do not correspond to whole letters but to portions of letters, "in such a way," he says, "that it was difficult to see the point where the ends of each letter met". "One of the prettiest volumes of the Didot. The "Didot" with which this volume is printed did not yet have all the coldness that one reproaches to him and in this format, it is of a perfect distinction" (André Jammes). Very attractive copy in pink cardboard of the time, equipped with a slice protector, an unusual curiosity. The subtle colour of this slice-guard, apple green, matches the colour of the paper used for the lining and the guards. It comes from the library Jacques Deschamps de Saint-Amand (1746-1826), who had his name minted on a coin at the tail. This farmer-general was the father of Émile Deschamps, founder with Victor Hugo of the French Muse. Dos un peu passé (Bibliothèque de l'Institut, Les Didot, imprimeurs de l'Institut de France, 2005, p. 9 - Jammes, Bibliotheca bibliographica, nº 231: "
