BION and MOSCHUS. Idylls of Bion and Moschus,... - Lot 104 - Giquello
BION and MOSCHUS. Idylls of Bion and Moschus, translated into French by J. B. Gail. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Didot jeune, Gail, L'An troisième [1795]. In-18, 106 pp. and 1 f.n.ch.: midnight blue morocco, triple gold fillet edged with a rat tooth, ornate spine, beige morocco lining decorated with a frame of fillets and a large oval medallion mosaic of midnight blue, the whole decorated with small irons and flowered stems, gold edges, untrimmed (Cuzin). Portrait of the translator and 4 pretty figures by Le Barbier, engraved by Dambrun, Delignon and Gaucher. One of the copies in large wove paper with the engravings in double state: before the letter and pure etching. (Cohen, 151-152.- Rahir, Bibliothèque de l'amateur, p. 323.) A choice copy, bound by Cuzin for Baron de Claye (1851-1903). The decoration of the lining imitating the woodwork of the time, gilded with small irons and mosaic, is remarkable and its execution perfect. Among the irons used is a small bird iron similar to that of Derome; the figure of the bibliophile, composed of his interlaced initials, is melted into the decoration of the lower lining. Bookplates from the Anatole de Claye (cat. I, 1904, no. 119) and Édouard Rahir (cat. VI, 1938, no. 1654: "Rich lined binding, executed on brochure") libraries.
