GARNIER (Charles-Georges-Thomas)
Of the destruction of the feudal system. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, Blin, 1791. - Traité du rachat des rentes foncières. Paris, Chez l'Auteur, Blin, Desenne, De l'Imprimerie de Provost, February 19, 1791. Together 2 works in one volume in-8, of 3 ff.n.ch., VI and 182 pp. (badly figured 183); 1 f.n.ch. (title), 100 pp., pp. 184-225: olive-green vellum, broad orange-painted frame bordering the covers, smooth spine, red morocco titleplate, red edges (contemporary binding). Original editions. Works on the question of property, in which the author presents and comments very clearly on all the new laws passed by the National Assembly from 4 August 1789 and their consequences on seigneurial rights, such as the abolition of the exclusive right of hunting and captaincies, the abolition of tolls, roads, dead hand, etc., and the abolition of the right of the seigneur to use the land as a hunting ground, the right of the captain of the lordship of the town. The Treatise on the Repurchase of Land Rents, which is a complement to the first work, is quite complete with a list and explanation of the decrees omitted in the latter (paginated 184-225). Charles-Georges-Thomas Garnier (1746-1795), lawyer and writer born in Auxerre, is mainly known for his compilation of Voyages imaginaires, songes, visions and cabalistic novels published in 39 volumes between 1787 and 1790. A pleasant copy in a curious binding of the time in green vellum, the "aristocratic" gilt filets replaced here by a line of red paint. Some freckles.
