BLONDEL (François)
Thermarum Aquisgranensium, and Porcetanarum elucidatio, & thaumaturgia. Aquisgrani [Aachen], Johann Heinrich Clemens, 1688. In-4, title-frontispice, 12 ff.n.ch., 160 pp., 5 ff.n.ch. (the last one containing the errata), 2 plates: rigid shaped plates, black calf's edge running along the bit, two-strap sewing, cream calf's back bearing the title, untrimmed (J. de Gonet). Third edition of this treatise on the mineral and thermal waters of Aachen and Borset. The copper-engraved illustration comprises: a title-frontispiece with a large coat of arms of Aachen on the reverse side, 4 coats of arms printed on a figure on the reverse side of the title, a portrait of the author, 2 folding plates with views of Aachen and Borset, and 16 figures of various sizes in the text, one of which is a very pretty equestrian portrait of Charlemagne in his hunting outfit (p. 2). Note that two of these vignettes are not printed directly on the sheet, but glued in the spaces provided (pp. 50 and 116). Interesting binding by Jean de Gonet on an old book. If the bookbinder has mostly bound modern books, sometimes from the 19th century, antique books are an exception in his production. Manuscript ex-libris of the 18th century on the title: Bibliothecae Vallis Dei, probably the Cistercian abbey of Val-Dieu near Liège in Belgium. Title-frontispiece and verso of the errata leaf scorched by the guards.
