BEVERLAND (Adriaan)
De Stolatae virginitatis swears lucubratio academica. Leyden, Joannis Lindani, 1680, In-8, 6 ff.n.ch., 223 pp. and 2 ff.n.ch.: red morocco, triple gilt fillet, lozenge at the corners, smooth spine decorated, inner wheel, gilt edges (end of 18th century binding). Original edition. Licentious work of Adriaan Beverland (1650-1716), Dutch jurist and philosopher who was condemned for his writings judged obscene and heretical by the court of the University of Leiden. In De stolatae virginitatis, whose content is no less chaste than in his original Peccatum (Of Original Sin), published two years earlier and immediately burned by the hangman's hand, the author makes a detailed study of prostitution and lust among women, particularly in antiquity. According to Karen Eline Hollewand, The Banishement of Beverland (2019, p. 36), the book was composed in 1672 at Oxford where the author was studying, and then printed around September 1679 despite the date on the title page. A fine copy in a fine morocco binding attributable to Derome. Quoted by Brunet (I, col. 837), it comes from the library of Antoine-Augustin Renouard (I, 1819, p. 127, and 1853, no. 195) and would have subsequently belonged to General Willems (flynote attached). An ex-libris torn off on a guard. Back very slightly faded, some slight foxing.
