RETZ (Cardinal de)
The Conjuration of Count Jean-Louïs de Fiesque. Cologne, 1665. Petit in-12, 136 pp.: long-grained red morocco, cold rolled, diamond-square panel drawn by gilt fillets interrupted at the head and foot by stylized scrolls, the central diamond underlined by a cold beaded wheel, smooth spine decorated with the gilt title in a cartouche, triple inner fillet crossing at the corners, vellum endpapers, gilt edges (binding c. 1830). First Elzevirian edition, published the same year as the original. Elegant typography, it is one of the rarest editions of the Elzevier series. (Tchemerzine, V, p. 393 - Willems, no. 1352.) Very nice binding decorated with a lozenge-rectangle type compartment decoration, probably executed in a Belgian workshop. A copy by Charles Pieters (1782-1863), Flemish bibliophile and specialist of the Elzevier family, with bookplate (1864, no. 796).
