PUENTE (Luis de la)
Digitus dei in bivio sive Tractatus de providentia dei circa distributionem Statuum, Officiorum, & Vivae rationum [...]. Ingolstadt, Gregorius Haenlin, 1619. In-12, 12 ff.n.ch., 250 pp. (the last miscalculated 252, the pagination jumping from 215 to 218) and 1 ff.n.ch.: stamped fawn calf, plates framed with spandrel motifs and two casters, oval medallion in the centre depicting the Virgin Mary, traces of fasteners, spine decorated with fillets and an iron repeated in the boxes, gilt and chiselled edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this treatise on spirituality by Luis de la Puente (1554-1624) (Louis Du Pont in its francised form), a Spanish priest and theologian who was one of the most illustrious representatives of the Society of Jesus. The work, published in the context of the Catholic Counter-Reformation, was intended for the (sodal) members of the Marian congregations, especially that of Ingolstadt (Bavaria), to whom the dedicatory epistle is addressed: Founded in the mid-1570s by Father Jakob Rem, this congregation was one of the most influential in Catholic Central Europe, since for all of Southern Germany and the states of the House of Austria [it was] the meeting place for the formation of all those who were destined to serve the Tridentine Church and the Catholic princes in positions of responsibility (Ludwig Chatellier, "At the Origin of a Catholic Society: the role of Marian congregations in the 16th-18th centuries" in Histoire, économie & société, 1984, No. 2, pp. Remarkable binding with the emblem of the Virgin, probably made in Southern Germany or Austria. We note the beautiful iron struck in spandrel, showing an angel with outstretched wings (the Archangel Gabriel?), sitting, looking towards the Serpent, holding a trunk and trampling on a monster's head. The white sheet facing the title is detached. Minimal worm marks at the bottom of the first dish.
