SUARÈS (père Jacques)
Twenty speeches on the XII chapter of the Revelation of St. John, where it is treated of the main marks of the Church, in order to recognize what is true, and thus to agree with the truth, and to end all debates concerning religion. Paris, Nicolas du Fossé, undated [1608]. Strong volume in-8, title-frontispiece, 14 ff.n.ch., 813 pp., 48 ff.n.ch.: garnet morocco, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with a fanfare around a figure in the center, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Beautiful title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio by Léonard Gaultier, dated 1608, with the title placed in a cartouche flanked on either side by the allegories of the triumphant Church and the militant Church, and surmounted by the coat of arms of Chancellor Nicolas Brulart de Sillery (1544-1624), to whom this edition is dedicated. Beautiful morocco binding, the spine entirely covered with a fanfare decoration with the figure of Méry de Vic in the centre († 1622). Méry de Vic, Lord of Ermenonville, was President of the Parliament of Toulouse, Superintendent of Guyenne under the reign of Henri IV and Keeper of the Seals under Louis XIII. His library, with about 3000 volumes that belonged to Jean Grolier, was passed on after his death to his son Dominique († 1662), Archbishop of Auch. From the Chandon de Briailles library, with ex-libris. Bbb notebook a little yellowed. Gallery of verses on the upper edge of pp. 439-472, without gravity, and at the head of the table leaves, sometimes touching letters or complete words. Small wormhole at the tail, two dark spots on the plates.
