Poemata. Without place or date [Geneva, Henri II Estienne, 1574]. 3 parts in one volume in-8, 8 ff.n.ch., 135 pp., 134 pp., 1 f. white and 112 pp.: supple vellum, double gilt fillet, spandrels, central cartouche with interlacing motifs and reserve middle, traces of laces, smooth spine decorated, gilt edges (contemporary binding). First edition of Horace's poems published and commented by Henri II Estienne (c. 1531-1598) at a time when the poet had entered all the colleges, except the one in Geneva due to Calvin's prohibition. It is dedicated to Jean de Bellièvre (1524-1584), president of the Parliament of Grenoble and French ambassador to Switzerland. A copy set in a very pure and elegant gilt vellum binding. Label from the Jesuit library of Turin. An old note on a guard and ex-libris manuscript of the 17th century at the foot of the title (name of the owner crossed out). Uniform light foxing, several folios at the head of the manuscript. The last 12 leaves including the index are missing.
