VALERE MAXIME
Dictorum factorumque memorabilium exempla. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1544 [at the end]: 7 January 1545. In-8, 446 pp., 12 ff.n.ch. and 1 f. white: overlapping soft vellum ivory wove vellum, double gilt fillet, in the centre a medallion of foliage charged with a dce (or dci) numeral, smooth spine decorated with double box-formed fillets, the same numeral repeated, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Les Faits et dits mémorables by this Roman historian and moralist who lived in the first century AD is a collection of anecdotes taken from the historians of antiquity and divided into nine books. This edition, beautifully printed in italics, includes an Epitome of Titus Probius which is not found in all editions and which complements Valère Maxime's work by forming Book X. A very pure copy, preserved in gold vellum of the time with the unidentified number of its first owner. Small initials AD affixed in ink on the title. From the Joseph Renard library, with ex-libris (1881, nº1574). (Renouard, Estienne, p. 65, no. 18.)
