HENRY (Maurice)
The Void Shapes. Paris, Les Éditions de Minuit, 1955. In-4, illustrated editor's cardboard. Original edition and first print run of this remarkable and famous transformation album. Maurice Henry's illustration consists of 32 black and coloured plates, mostly openwork. A system of caches and cut-outs allows, by playing with shapes and colours, to modify the settings, characters, and figurative or abstract compositions that illustrate this dreamlike odyssey. The poet and illustrator Maurice Henry, born in 1907, was close to René Daumal's Grand Jeu and the Surrealists. There are copies with a different cover, presenting a variation in the cutting of a board. The print run, the exact number of which is not known, would not have exceeded 500 copies. Small break on one board, otherwise good condition.
